What goes in an EAE portfolio
There is no template, no page limit and no published file size. That is not an oversight — the portfolio is not a form. It is the pile of evidence you bring to the interview, and most of them are padded.

It is evidence for a conversation, not an upload
The write-up is capped and counted. The portfolio is not. Singapore Polytechnic describes supporting documents — a portfolio of works, testimonials on leadership, competitions and programmes — as things you are encouraged to prepare for the selection stage. Republic Polytechnic names the portfolio as one of three steps alongside the write-ups and the interview. Ngee Ann Polytechnic asks applicants to build an e-portfolio and emails each one the submission instructions.
Read those three together and the point is clear. The portfolio is there so that a person across a table can pick something up and ask you about it. Its job is not to look impressive on its own. Its job is to survive being questioned.
Which also means: a portfolio is not only for design and media courses. Republic and Ngee Ann both describe it as a general component, with artwork and photography given as examples for creative courses rather than as the only thing it can hold. An engineering applicant with a photo of the thing they fixed is in exactly the same business.
The same role, entered twice
Both of these describe one student who was class chairperson. One is a line from a CV. The other gives the interviewer four things to ask about.
Class Chairperson, Sec 3 and Sec 4. Responsible for leading the class and liaising with teachers. Certificate of appointment attached. Also received Edusave Award for Achievement, Good Leadership and Service.
Class chairperson, 2025. Our class kept losing marks on the weekly cleanliness audit, so in March I put up a rota on the whiteboard with two names a day instead of asking the whole class. We went from about 6 out of 10 to 9 out of 10 for the rest of Term 2. Two people never showed up and I ended up doing their days myself, which is when I learnt to pair people rather than assign them alone. Photo of the rota, and the audit sheet, are on the next page.
The six things worth a page
Six categories, in rough order of how much weight they carry. Most students have material in four of them and only think to include one.

Work you actually made
Artwork, code, a model, a business plan, a video, a recipe, a repaired engine, a spreadsheet that ran a real event. The thing itself, plus one line on what problem it solved.

A role you held, with what changed under you
CCA committee, class chairperson, peer support, student council. The title is the label; the evidence is what was different by the time you handed over.

Competitions and projects, with the result
Including the ones you did not win. What you entered, what you submitted, what the judges or the data said, and what you would do differently.

Community involvement that was not a one-off
VIA, volunteering, a family responsibility you carry. Repeat visits beat a single event, and a specific person you helped beats a headcount.

Work, attachments and side income
Part-time work, a stall, a small commission, a service you ran for neighbours. Panels take this seriously, and most applicants leave it out.

Testimonials and references, if they say something specific
A teacher or supervisor sentence naming what you did is worth including. A generic template letter is not, and reads as padding.
Four things that make it worse
Certificates of attendance
A certificate that proves you were present proves nothing about you. Ten of them makes the two that matter harder to find.
Every photograph you have
A group photo of forty people in matching shirts tells the reader nothing. One photo of the thing you made, or of you doing the work, does.
Anything you cannot talk about for two minutes
The portfolio exists so it can be picked up and questioned. If you would have to bluff about a page, remove the page.
Anything an adult wrote for you
A parent-polished description does not survive the first follow-up question, and the gap between the page and the person in the room is obvious.
A thin portfolio of four real things beats a thick one of twenty. Length is the one signal you fully control, and padding is the one thing a reader spots without effort.
The format question, answered honestly
Applicants ask how many pages, what file type, how many megabytes. No polytechnic publishes those numbers, so nobody can honestly tell you. What is published is thinner than you would like:
So build the version that works everywhere: a PDF, readable on a phone, short enough that a reader reaches the end. If your course asks for something else, you will be told, and you will already have the contents.
Build it in an afternoon
The design of the document is not the work. Choosing what belongs in it, and being able to talk about each page, is the work.
One afternoon, six steps
- 01Open one document. Not a website, not a design tool — a document you can export as PDF.
- 02Page 1: your name, the course you applied for, and a contents list. Nothing else.
- 03One item per page, in the order that matters most to that course, not in date order.
- 04Each page: what it was, when, what you did, what changed, one image or scan as evidence.
- 05Read it out loud. Any sentence you cannot say naturally, rewrite in your own words.
- 06Export as PDF, name it your-name-course.pdf, and check it opens on a phone.
Then hand it to someone who was not there and ask them what you are good at. If they cannot answer from the pages, the pages are labels.
What happens to it in the room
The selection stage is an aptitude test, an interview, or both. Ngee Ann notes interviews may be one-on-one or in a group with course-related activities. Republic tells applicants to prepare talking points linking their experience to the course.
None of that is a memory test about your portfolio. It is the opposite: the portfolio is the prompt sheet, and what they are listening for is whether you understood your own experience. Two students can bring the same page. The one who can say what it changed about how they work is the one who gets the offer.
If you applied this cycle, offers for the AY2027 intake are released from 2pm on 8 September 2026, have to be accepted by 11.59pm on 11 September, and the withdrawal window then runs to 16 October. If you are in Sec 3 or your first year at ITE, the useful thing to do right now is not to write anything. It is to stop losing the year while it is happening.
